Not Everyone’s Child
This advertisement has always bothered me.
Now before you get angry, my problem isn’t with wireless amber alerts. I think we can all agree, anything that helps rescue a kidnapped child is a good thing. What bothers me is a flaw in the advertisement’s logic.
If an abducted child is everyone’s child, then that child also belongs to the abductor, meaning the child was never abducted in the first place.
That is a troubling thought, so I fixed the wording. It’s a little less elegant but much clearer.

Well done — and timely (considering Elizabeth Smart is all over the news today).

Thank you J., but I assure you that any timeliness on my part is entirely coincidental.

Why does your message assume the abductor to be a “man”? Wouldn’t “human” be better? I mean, if you’re going for accuracy and all…

“Terrible person” was too long, but now that I think about it “bad person” should fit. I’ll have to fix it.

I love the interwebicon. I start a journey to search on waxing a mustache and end up here and find myself enjoying the trip.
Superlatives are what I hate. “No Smoking. Except in designated areas.” Why not just say “Smoking allowed in Designated areas only.”
as for the man/woman/human person debate the word Evil works for all child abductors, unless you are that guy in Japan trying to get his kids back from his crazy wife….

Man, I laughed out loud reading that second swing; not often that happens when I read a random blog. So thanks, Adam, amusement accomplished!
